Investigation/Assessment

When the Children’s Services Family Assessment Unit screens a referral of abuse or neglect, we are required by law to complete an investigation and a process by which we can assess any risks within the family. The assessment includes a face-to-face interview with each member of the household, contact with any person/professional who can provide additional information, visits in the family’s home, and completion of the written family assessment document. This is often a stressful time for the family, regardless of the outcome.

We will gather information, complete the assessment, and help the family become involved with any services they may need. The assessment has guidelines which determine any additional steps the family or the agency must take.

Some situations are resolved easily. Some are complicated and may require court involvement.
